GASTRONOMIC TOUR OF NEWSTEAD HOUSE

Join us to celebrate the arrival of spring at Newstead House with colonial Gastronomer Jacqui Newling from Sydney Living Museums. Over two days we are hosting two wonderful events deliving in tot he intriguing culiinary exploits of our early colonists.
Colonial Gastronomer Jacqui Newling for this intimate gastronomic tour of NEwstead House where you will learn about the role food played ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ in the early days. Explore historic menus from colonial Brisbane and try your hand at making a batch of salt-preserved lemons in the house’s original 1846 cellars.
ABOUT JACQUI NEWLING
Jacqui Newling explores our history and heritage through food. She has a Le Cordon Bleu Masters’ degree in gastronomy and is resident gastronomer at Sydney Living Museums and curator at their ‘Eat Your History’ projects. Taking a hands-on approach, Jacqui explores archival material, private letters, journals and diaries, and recreates (and tasts!) recipes from historic menus, cookbooks and manuscript collections to rediscover forgotten flavours, arcane tastes and ‘lost’ culinary techniques from 1788 to the 1950’s.
Jacqui shares her knowledge through hands-on Colonial Gastronomy programs and workshops in the SLM’s historic houses, she is ‘the Cook’ in SLM’s The Cook & the Curator blog and author of hte heritage-award winning book, Eat your history: stories and recipes from Australian kitchens.
